Key & Lock Guide

Key Fob Will Not Start the Car?

When a key fob will not start the car, the cause is often simple. Work through these checks before assuming the worst.

Try the fob battery first

A weak fob battery is the most common cause. Many vehicles let you hold the fob against the start button or steering column to start even when the battery is low.

Check the vehicle battery

If the dash is dim or the doors will not respond, the vehicle's own battery may be the issue rather than the fob.

Look for interference

Other electronics, a second fob nearby, or a damaged fob can interfere. Step away from other key fobs and try again.

Use the mechanical backup

  • Many fobs hide a metal blade to unlock the door
  • Some vehicles have a hidden slot or pad to detect the fob directly
  • Your owner manual shows the backup start method

When to call a locksmith

If the fob is damaged, lost, or no longer recognized, a locksmith can repair, replace, or reprogram it to your vehicle on site for the makes we cover.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it the fob or the car?

If lights and doors respond but the engine will not start, it often points to the fob. If everything is dead, suspect the vehicle battery.

In many cases yes. We diagnose, replace, and program fobs to your vehicle for the makes and models we cover.
